Mamie has 8 years of public health informatics experience at CDC and has been implementing the communities of practice model for 4 years at CDC and with public health partners. She is the Acting Manager of the Communities of Practice Program within the National Center for Public Health Informatics (NCPHI) at CDC.
Mamie began work at CDC, first in the Clifton Information Center where she developed a prototype digital repository of CDC’s PSA materials and other publications, then as co-lead of the CDC Web Redesign Team where she led the efforts to develop a metadata schema and a controlled health thesaurus for tagging CDC web content and the CDC Health Topics A-Z list. In her next position as Manager of the Vocabulary & Messaging Program within NCPHI she promoted the use of vocabulary and messaging standards through the continued evolution of the PHIN Vocabulary Access and Distribution System (VADS) and development of standards-based Messaging Specification Guides for diseases and conditions. In 2005, she launched the Public Health Vocabulary Community of Practice to foster collaboration among CDC Program Vocabularists and CDC Partners. Mamie received the NCPHI Top Collaborator Award in 2006 for this successful activity and a group award with her Partnership and Outreach Team in 2008.
Prior to joining CDC, Mamie was Director of Libraries at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she managed the Egleston and Scottish Rite Medical Libraries and established 4 Family and Neighborhood Information Centers for patients, their families and friends. She holds a Masters degree in Library Science and Information Management from Emory University, a Masters degree in English from the University of Georgia, and is a distinguished member of the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).
